Journalists vote to strike over closure of Trinity Mirror newspapers

Journalists at Trinity Mirror Midlands have voted in favour of striking in protest at plans by the company to close nine newspapers, including The Lichfield Post.

According to a report in The Guardian, more than 80 per cent of Trinity Mirror staff who are National Union of Journalists members in the Midlands voted to take industrial action as a result of the move.

Chris Morley, from the NUJ, told The Guardian that members were prepared to fight redundancies which could hit nearly 12o members of staff. He said:

“Trinity Mirror management should realise that compulsory redundancies, and the attacks on journalism in the Midlands that they propose, are totally unacceptable to their own workforce.”

 However, Trinity Mirror hit back branding the decision “reckless”. A spokesperson added:

“We are fighting to secure the future of our businesses in the Midlands which are now running at a loss. This action will not benefit their members in any way whatsoever.”
