Lichfield City’s recent run of good results came to and endas they suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of high-flying Kenilworth Town KH in the Midland Combination Second Division.

Manager Dean Gilbert blamed “poor refereeing decisions” for City’s defeat, who went into the game on the back of four consecutive victories.

The City manager felt that the corner that lead to Kenilworth’s opener should not have been awarded and also believed that his side were denied a blatant penalty with the scores level at 2-2.

Gilbert explained:

“I think referees have a hard job but I also think that match officials have to be able to handle the games that they are picked to officiate. I honestly believe that poor refereeing decisions cost us on Saturday.

“I thought it should have been a goal-kick but they were given a corner, which they scored from, and then Rob Burnside was hacked down in their box and we got nothing. It was hard to take to be honest.”

The hosts opened the scoring midway through the first-half but City hit back through Liam Holt and Sam Geffen to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Kenilworth dominated the second period though and hit three goals without reply to ensure City left Gypsey Lane with nothing.
